Load-on, Transport and Float-off of Caissons

BOA was appointed as the main contractor for the load-on, transport, and float-off of 21 caissons, which serve as the primary elements of the 1,150-meter breakwater for the nearshore LNG Hub Marine Terminal located on the border between Mauritania and Senegal. Each caisson weighs approximately 16,000 tonnes, highlighting the scale and complexity of this ambitious project.

The load-out and transport operations were meticulously planned and executed to ensure the safe and efficient handling of the caissons. BOABARGE 33, a heavy lift, semi-submersible barge, was selected for this task due to its impressive capabilities and adaptability. Major modifications were made to BOABARGE 33 to achieve a record-breaking submersing depth of 21 meters above deck, necessary to safely load out and float off the caissons with a floating draft of 17 meters.

Upon arrival at the installation site, the float-off operations commenced. The caissons were floated off in a controlled and precise manner, ensuring their stability and integrity throughout the process. The successful completion of the float-off operations marked a significant milestone in the project, demonstrating BOA’s expertise and commitment to excellence.

BOA’s scope of work (SoW) included the provision of two tugs, Boa Brage and Boa Heimdal, for handling and towing the barge. Additionally, BOA was responsible for the design, fabrication, and installation of guideposts, grillage, and skidding beams. Our in-house engineering team provided extensive engineering and operational services during both the planning and execution phases.

The operational team at the site during the contract period consisted of 16-18 highly skilled personnel from BOA. Their expertise and dedication ensured that all operations were conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all relevant regulations and standards. The operational phase in Dakar commenced in mid-January 2021, marking the beginning of a successful and well-coordinated effort.

This project underscores BOA’s capability to handle large-scale marine engineering and offshore operations with precision and expertise. The successful load-on, transport, and float-off of the 21 caissons onboard BOABARGE 33 exemplify our commitment to delivering exceptional solutions and achieving project milestones efficiently.
